Fieldscapes
I come to the tile-making world via the path of ceramic sculpting, which I have been doing for a number of years since moving to the Seattle area from San Francisco. My sculptures are made of fired clay, which is either glazed or painted after firing with various combinations of acrylics, watercolors, and pastels. My pieces vary from figuratives to abstracts, and are sculpted either in the round or in relief. They range in size from several inches to several feet.
Along with efforts to model the human form, I recently created a series of plaque sculptures depicting faces in various reflective or spiritual moods, surrounded with imagery inspired by multicultural and even mythic ideas.
I am also currently working on a series of ceramic tiles in a variety of sizes and designs. I am fascinated by the play of geometric patterns that can be achieved in the tile format. I get very inspired by traditional designs from various cultures of the world, and often try to reflect those designs in my work. My tiles are often quite large, and in deep relief.
I am currently accepting commissions. |
